How To Propagate String Of Turtles

Did you know that there are some plants that you can grow a whole new plant by simply taking a cutting and putting it in water or dirt?

This process is known as propagation and it is far easier to do than you might think.

How To Propagate String Of Turtles

Plants like string of hearts, prayer plants, pothos, string of turtles, and more can be propagated. If you know how….and that is what we are going to cover in this article.

So, without further ado, let us dive right in and learn how to propagate a string of turtles!

Propagating String Of Turtles

In this section we are going to take a closer look at the two main methods you can use to propagate a string of turtles plant.

Ready to get started? Well, let’s dive right in then! There is a lot to cover!

Method 1 – Stem Cutting In Soil

The first method will involve you taking a cutting from your mother plant and sticking the stem or cut sided into either soil or a sphagnum moss and perlite combo.

Below is a basic step-by-step guide on how you can do this method:

1. Get Yourself A Cutting

Before you can do anything you are going to need a cutting from your string of turtles plant. This cutting should be between five and six inches long.

As a quick note, you should really make sure to propagate in the spring or summer as this is the best time for your plant to grow and become strong.

2. Get A Pot With Soil

You will need to get a pot filled with damp soil or a sphagnum moss and perlite. The leaves of your cutting should be laid down with the backs of the leaves on the soil.

Make sure not to bury your cuttings. Just place the cutting on top of the soil with the leaves touching the soil.

If you have some you can sprinkle a little hormone powder on the nodes of your cutting to increase the chances of your cutting taking root faster.

This is however an optional addition.

3. Cover The Planter

With your cutting in the planter you will now need to cover the top of the planter using saran wrap. On the top has been covered you should poke a few holes in it so that air can get in.

4. Tend To Your Propagation

At least once a week you need to remove the saran wrap so that your little string of turtles plant can air out. You should also mist it with fresh water when the soil get s dry.

Make sure not to overwater your cutting as it will not be good for your new little plant.

5. Check Up On Your Propagation

You should make sure to check up on your string of turtles propagation regularly. This way you can get an idea of how it is doing and whether you need to give it fresh air, water or more sunlight.

After a few weeks of careful tending your little cutting should have taken root and you can resume regular care of your plant.

Method 2 – Stem Cutting In Water

In this section we are going to talk about how you can propagate your string of turtles using the water method as opposed to the planter and soil method.

So, without further ado, let us dive right in and get started!

1. Get Yourself A Cutting

How To Propagate String Of Turtles (1)

Before you can start propagating you are going to need a cutting from your main string of turtles plant. This cutting should be between five and six inches long.

As a quick note, you should really make sure to propagate in the spring or summer as this is the best time for your plant to grow and become strong.

2. Make Sure No Leaves Are On The Bottom Of The Stem

To prepare for propagation using the water method you are going to need to take off all the leaves from the bottom half of your cutting.

Take care as these plants are quite delicate and you can easily break the stem if you are too rough with the cutting.

Take your time and carefully remove the leaves without damaging the stem of your cutting.

3. Place The Cutting In Water

The end of your cutting that has been stripped must be placed into a cup or another container filled with water.

Now all you have to do is monitor the root growth of your cutting and make sure that the water stays fresh.

4. Plant Your Rooted Cutting

Once you have a cutting with a good amount of root growing you can then take your cutting and plant it in fresh soil.

Once you have planted your cutting you must then make sure that your plant stays moist for the next few weeks. This is so that the roots are able to get established in the soil.

Final Thoughts

We hope that you have enjoyed reading this article and learning about how you can propagate these adorable little viney plants.

It is far easier to do it than you might think, so do not be scared to try.

You will need a mother plant that needs some trimming and you should be able to at least try to make a whole new plant.

With your cutting, all you will need is one of the two methods we have covered in this article. This should be enough for you to at least give it a try.

Make sure that when your cutting has sprouted roots and new sprigs of leaves you give it enough water, sunlight and nutrients.

At this point you should be caring for it as you would a regular string of turtles.

With all of that said, we hope that this article has been interesting and helpful to you. Good luck propagating your string of turtles!
